Introduction by the Head and the Chairman of Governors

Learning Web

Malton School seeks to serve students through responding positively to educational changes whilst remaining true to our traditional values of respect and tolerance established over our 450 year history. We offer a safe, secure and structured community in which young people can grow up confidently. Change is evolutionary. Changes are measured against our main responsibility: to serve the best interests and needs of students whilst also planning ahead to meet future needs and to improve what the school can offer its members.

The school, whilst challenging students to fulfil their potential academically, physically and personally, seeks to reflect the predominantly rural community of Central Ryedale that it serves. Respect is at the heart of our behaviour code.

We believe it is important to keep classes small, especially in Years 7, 8 and 9 when students are coming to terms with the change from primary school. In Years 10 and 11 we aim to provide the courses chosen by students and parents - each year the timetable is built round the choices made. Despite being one of the smaller 11-18 comprehensive schools in North Yorkshire we currently offer 18 subjects at Advanced Level, having added Sociology and Information Technology A-levels in recent years. Additionally there is a Vocational Advanced Qualification (Health & Social Care) course within the Sixth Form.

Examination results at GCSE have tended to be well above national averages in recent years, though in a relatively small school there will be proportionately larger annual fluctuations in the percentages of students achieving higher grades. In 2001 63% of Year 11 students gaining five or more A* - C results. 100% of Year 11 students passed three or more GCSEs, and 100% of students passed at least one A-level in 2001. The School was one of a select few to receive a national School Achievement Award from the Department for Education in 2001.

We hope that this Website will give you the information you are seeking about the School. We warmly encourage you to come and look round on our Open Evening. If you would like to visit the School during the School day, please telephone; one of the Senior Staff will be very happy to meet you and your family, show you round and answer your questions.

Thank you for your interest in Malton School.

Yours sincerely

Rob Williams
